Describe the three basic components or types of memory.
sensory memory - info lost quickly
short-term memory - uses recency effect, can store 7 pieces of information, acoustic coding
long-term memory - uses primacy effect, large capacity, somatic coding
Explain simple methods to improve patient recall.
grouping info together, focus on key aspects, stressing importance, reinstatement of context
Describe adherence and give evidence of rates of non-adherence.
adherence is how much a patient follows through with the treatment and advice they have been given.
rates of non-adherence vary due to different ways it is measured. anywhere from 28 to 79%
Suggest factors which are likely to influence patient adherence.
how many time medication is taken, side effects, conviniece, cost, lifestyle, percieved need of treatment, anxiety, depression, health education, patient belief
Identify strategies to improve patient adherence.
The possibility of non-adherence should always be considered. Doctors should ask for compliance and create an environment where patients can discuss non-adherence.
Improving communication and considering a patient’s beliefs and health education can promote adherence.
