Clinical Psychology Practical Flashcards
Content Analysis
Used to analyse qualitative data. It is a technique that can turn qualitative data to quantitative. In content analysis you also identify coding units and analyse the data by applying the coding units
Hypothesis
There will be more negative references, such as ‘schizo’ or ‘crazy’, for people shown to have mental health disorders, in the older film when compared to the more modern film
IV
Changing two films’ (A Beautiful Mind, Silver Linings Playbook) time periods, 2001 and 2012, to see how different eras portray mental health.
DV
Number of negative references, such as words or body language, used to portray people suffering from mental health disorders, counted from chosen films.
Control Variable
We all agreed to not look for specific words but to use our judgement and tally the scores of negative references towards the people in the film with mental health disorder. Some of the things we agreed on including ‘negative references’ were things like insults, abuse, harassment, assault ect.
Aim
The aim of this study was to see how use of negative words associated with mental illness have changed over time through observation of 2 films.
Strength
Reliability in this study is a strength as we used standardised instructions, reducing the naturalistic element so it can easily be tested and retested to try and find similar results.
Weakness
Reliability is also a weakness in this study as the 2nd watcher had seen the movie on the plane, this meant there were extraneous variables like noise and distractions, as well as him being tired.
