What is Depression
Affect how a person may feel, think, and handle daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working.
Major Depression
Depression most of the time for at least two
(2) weeks interfere with one’s ability to work, sleep, study, and eat.
Persistent Depressive Disorder
Less severe symptoms of Depression that last much longer, typically for at least two (2) years.
Children
Older children and teens
Anxious, cranky, pretend to be sick, refuse to go to school, cling to a parent, or worry that a parent may die.
Trouble at school, sulk, be easily frustrated‚ feel restless, or have low self-esteem
Females begin to experience depression more often than males
Younger adults
Irritable, complain of weight gain and hypersomnia (episodes of excessive daytime sleepiness or prolonged nighttime sleep),
Often have other disorders
Treatments
Several antidepressant medications- Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRIs)— Tricyclics, and the Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors (MAOIs).
Herbal- St. John’s Wort, an herb used in the treatment of mild to moderate Depression.
Psychotherapies: short-term (10-20 week) therapies, can help individuals navigating Depression.
Combined with “homework” assignments
learn how to find more satisfaction/rewards through their own actions.
Body-mind Therapies (exercise, massage therapy, Reflexology/Reiki and meditation, etc.)
