Clinical Decision Making Flashcards
Define clinical reasoning
- “The thinking and decision making process used during examination and management of patients.
- “A purposeful, self-regulator, non-linear and recursive cognitive process that a person uses to make a decision about what to d oin a given context.
What are the five factors to take into account when making a clinical decision?
- Intuition
- Pattern recognition
- Heuristics
- Algorithms
- Hypothetic-deductive reasoning
What are the four steps to the hypothetic deductive reasoning process?
- Gather Info
- Generate hypotheses
- Gather additional focused info
- Determine the probability for each hypothesis
Does the hypothetic deductive reasoning process leave room for integration of other strategies? If so, how?
Yes, use them to generate and rank various hypotheses.
What are the steps for science based clinical reasoning?
- Develop a question
- Investigate background info
- Propose a hypothesis
- Attempt to disprove your hypothesis
What is direct evidence and what does it do?
Directly relates to the clinical question, provides an answer that is specific.
What is indirect evidence and what does it do?
Indirectly relates to the clinical question. Establishes plausibility. Gwets you in the ballpark.
List three indirect evidence models
Biomedical, biopsychosocial, spectral
What types of questions should you always ask during an examination?
-How will the answer to this question/result of this test/diagnostic label affect the action/prognosis?
What types of questions should you always ask during an examination?
-How will the answer to this question/result of this test/diagnostic label affect the action/prognosis? i.e. is this the best use of our time.
What are the three types of lists/hypotheses you should generate as the result of clinical reasoning?
- Differential diagnosis
- Treatment options
- Impairments
