Countertransference
A
- A set of conscious or unconscious emotional reactions to a client experienced by a therapist.
- Feelings usually originate in thp’s own developmental conflicts or past.
- When this occurs, a good first step is to seek supervision (not just colleague
consultation, as colleagues may not have adequate training to know how to respond to this).

Transference
A
- Emotional rxns assigned to current relationships but originated in earlier experiences (often presenting as feelings clt has toward thp).
- When clt experiences this interxn w/ thp, it can be discussed and used therapeutically.

Dual Diagnosis
A
- Occurrence of coexistent diagnoses w/in an individual.
- Most commonly associated w/ a substance use disorder and another psychiatric disorder

Dual Relationship
A
- Having a 2nd role w/ clt in addition to clt-thp relationship, e.g. friend, business associate, family member, sex partner, etc.
- A dual relationship is anytime we know a clt outside of the therapeutic relationship.

Empathy
A
- A therapeutic technique in which social worker communicates to a clt that they
perceive and understand the experiences, emotional state, and/or ideas of their client.

Empowerment Model
A
- Model utilizes interventions that help ppl achieve sense of control by using clt’s strengths, resources, and resilience
- Aims to reduce powerlessness created by social and political environments that oppress.

Evidence Based Practice
A
- Combines social worker’s clinical experience, code of ethics, and clt prefs w/ well-researched interventions to guide tx and services a clt receives to achieve their therapeutic goals.

Informed Consent
A
- Process of a clt granting permission to engage in tx after receiving info about tx, including potential risks and benefits.

Self-Determination
A
An ethical principle of social work that allows clts to make their own choices about their tx and lives.

Confrontation
A
- Addressing and bringing awareness to something the clt may be overlooking,
avoiding, or denying. - We would not confront a clt until we have established rapport with them.
- When a clt is engaging in therapy interfering behavior, confronting may be necessary.

A
501(c)3: A non-profit, tax-exempt organization.

A
501(c)4: A lobbying organization. Unlike a 501(c)3, it is not exempt from paying federal taxes
- Lobbying is a form of advocacy that aims to influence decisions made by the
government.
- Lobbying often involves direct face-to face contact with politicians.

A
- A political action committee (PAC). Unlike a 501(c)3, it is not exempt from paying
federal taxes - A political action committee is an organization that raises money privately to influence elections or legislation.
