Clindamycin
Narrow spectrum
Bacteriostatic (inhibits growth and reproduction but doesn’t directly kill them).
Binds to cell walls, inhibiting cell wall protein synthesis
Works against what types of bacteria?
Gram + aerobes
Anaerobes
Indications
Staphylococcal joint + bone infections
Intra-abdominal sepsis
Cellulitis
Skin and soft tissue infections
Side effects
GI disturbances
- Antibiotic associated colitis (c.diff)
- Can be fatal
- Most commonly associated with clindamycin
Oesophageal disorders
Taste disturbances
Jaundice
Blood disorders
Rash
SJS
Who is most likely to get C.diff from Abx?
Middle-aged, elderly women.
ESPECIALLY after opertation.
Clindamycin - pt. counselling
If diarrhoea develops, STOP and see GP
Monitoring
Hepatic + renal function in infants AND all patients where treatment exceeds 10 days.
Contraindications + cautions
Do not use in patients with existing diarrhoea
