Clincial Applications of Spectrogram Analysis Flashcards
What does spectrographic analysis allow us to do clinically?
Allows us the ability to look at speech production and evaluate if a disorder is present and how much the person can compensate for the disorder.
This gives us a means to conceptualize problems of speech production. Problems can occur at the source or during the filtering stage.
Source Filter Theory
What does the measurement of acoustic characteristics from spectrograms allow?
Allows us to evaluate if an individual has been able to adequately compensate and helps us understand more about their production of speech if they are unintelligible
How can we evaluate the articulatory system?
- Duration of vowels and consonants
- Vowel formant measurements
This will show us if individuals are having trouble with the timing of their articulatory movements. If they are exhibiting longer or more variable durations in both consonants and vowels.
Duration of vowels and consonants
Our formants allow us to look at how sound production changes when our articulators are placed in different positons. This can show us those who have reduced control over their articulatory movements. These individuals may be unable to reach target positions with their articulators and this will reflect in these measurements
vowel formant measurements
Patients who have poor control over their articulators may also have issues when producing _______.
fricatives
Precise control of the ______ is needed to produce fricatives sounds.
tongue
What are some abnormalities found on spectrographic analysis?
Lower frequency peaks for sounds such as /s/
Wider bands of noise energy
Fricatives that look more like stops
Nasalized stops
True or False
Many people with hearing impairments may exhibit issues with articulation and resonance
True
What are common articulatory abnormalities of the hearing impaired?
Neutralization of the vowels (F1/F2 show limited range of movement of tongue)
Suprasegmentals related to duration of sounds and inappropriate variation of the fundamental frequency are noticed
Omissions and substitutions involving voicing and manner of articulation are present
