Climate/weather Flashcards
Define weather
The atmosphere conditions in s location at a given time
Define climate
The average temp in a location
Recorded over a long period of time
Define polar climate
Very cold
Dry throughout the year
Define temperate climate
Warm summers
Cool winters
Rain throughout the yr
Define arid climate
Dry
Very hot summers
Cool winters
Define tropical climate
Hot temperatures throughout yr
High rainfall throughout yr
Define Mediterranean climate
Hot dry summers
Mild wet winters
What amount of rainfall is classified as low
200mm+
What is low rainfall classed as
70mm or below
Why Do climates vary
Due to the concentration of the sun rays at different angles
Poles are cold as the rays are scattered
Places near the equator are warm as the rays are concentrated at a high intensity
Why do countries near the equator not have many distinct seasons
As the concentration of the rays is always very similar
and maintains that intensity at any angles
What does low air pressure indicate
Cloudy
Wet
as the rises easier and condenses when there is less pressure
What does high pressure indicate
Sun
Warmth
Dry
As the masses sink into the ground preventing it from condensing due to the warmth
