climate change affect on agriculture Flashcards
what will a one degree temperature rise result in?
10% decline in agriculture
what will we have to do to meet global food supplies by 2030?
must increase by 50%
what are the 2 main drivers of food production?
climate and soil
what has happened to global food production?
it has increased globally since 1960 due to rapid population increase
2 things that caused the gains in food production
green revolution after ww2 in developed countries - intensification of farming in Europe
easier access to trade routes
where has food consumption increased
everywhere except transition countries
mainly near east and north africa + latin america + carribbean
how will climate change affect agriculture? 2 and 4
lower crop yields + decrease nutritional quality
due to
droughts
heatwaves
increase in pests + diseases
floods
what is the predicted decline in global crop production
2-6% with every decade
benefit of climate change to uk - plant
increasing atmospheric co2 will continue to increase plant growth (although amount depends on water availability)
benefit of high atmospheric co2 levels
and negative
higher crop yields because of co2 fertilisation
however, lower nutritional value
negative sea level rise
low lying land s.e asia - loss of agricultural land
E.g. 1m sea level rise will cover several square km of rice paddies in Vietnam
benefit of warming temps
more arable land available in alaska as it thaws
