Climate change Flashcards
Quaternary period
it began 1.8 million years ago, it is the current period that we live in
period
3) a subdivision of time, that is smaller than an era but bigger than an epoch e.g: jurassic
era
2) subdivisions of eons e.g: cenozoic
eon
1) only smaller than a supereon which there has only been one of e.g: phanerzoic
age
5) subdivisions of epochs e.g: middles ages
epoch
4) subdivisions of periods e.g: paleocene
glacial period
a period in the earth’s history when polar and mountain ice sheets were unusually extensive across the earth’s surface
interglacial period
the time in-between glacial periods
ice cores
tubes of ice which are drilled out of the ground and show the different levels of carbon dioxide in the air as they air is frozen into the ice
fossil records
looking at rocks to see the different features that flora and fauna had adapted to cope with the conditions
orbital change
the adaption in the worlds orbit, which can influence the climate of the earth
milankovich cycles
cyclical movements related to the earths orbit, there are three: eccentricity, axial tilt and precession
sun spots
darker cooler areas of the sun that you can use to map the output of the sun
greenhouse effect
this is the natural layer of gases such as CO2, Methane etc which help keep in some of the earths warmth so that species can inhabit the planet
enhanced greenhouse effect
this is a much thicker layer of greenhouse gases which have built up due to humans releasing them and are warming the earth by not letting as much heat out and bouncing more of it back to the earth
