Climate Change Flashcards
Climate Change
Describes a change in the average conditions (temperature and rainfall) in a region or over the planet over a long period of time
Global Warming
A gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth’s atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increase level of CO2, chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and other pollutants as a result of natural influence or hum actives
Earth’s Atmosphere Gases
Nitrogen 78%, Oxygen 21%, Argon 0.9%, Other gases 0.1%
Layers of Atmosphere
Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere, Exosphere
Solar Variations
Refers to the amount of solar energy being released from the sun at any given point in time
Milankovitch Theory
Changes in the earths orbit around the sun and changes in the tilt and wobble of the earths axis can lead to cooling or warming of the earths climate change because they change the amount of energy our planet receives from the sun
Albedo
The reflectiveness of a surface. Lower the albedo the more radiations from the sun the gets absorbed by planet increasing temperature. Higher Albedo means the sun is more reflective , therefore more reductions is returned back to space, decreasing temperature
Surfaces of High Albedo
Ice and Snow
Surfaces of Low Albedo
open ocean and conifer forrest
Where does CO2 come from
Life itself, Volcanoes, Ocean, Burning of fossil fuels
Gases Contributing to Global Warming
Methane, CFCs, Ozone, Nitrous Oxide, Carbon Dioxide
What is the Greenhouse Effect
A process when goes in earths atmosphere traps the suns heat, maintaining a comfortable place and temperature to live
What is Enhanced Greenhouse Effect
Human actives such as burning fossil fuels, agriculture and land cleaning increase amount of greenhouse gases being released into atmosphere. Causing extra heat to be trapped making temperature rise
Main Sources of Greenhouse Gases
electricity, transport, stationary energy, agriculture, industrial processes, waste, land use
What is Kyoto Protocol
An agreement made in1997 and started in 2005 by the EU + 41 countries. Target was to reduced the 6 GHG emissions. Germany decreased by 8% while Australia increased by 8% due to high reliance on gases
