Climate Change Flashcards
Explain the human causes of climate change
-Burning of fossil fuels for industry and transport, producing carbon dioxide.
-Worldwide deforestation sometimes involving rainforest burning, which also
produces carbon dioxide
-car exhausts, nitrogen fertilisers and power stations producing nitrous oxide,
enhancing the natural greenhouse effect
Name 4 of the greenhouse gases.
-Carbon Dioxide
-Methane
-Nitrous Oxides
-hydroflurocarbons
What are the physical causes of climate change?
-changes on the suns surface
-volcanic eruptions
-ocean currents
-melting permafrost
Explain how volcanic eruptions can impact on global temperatures.
Large quantities of dust in the atmosphere shield the earth from the suns heat, decreasing the temperatures.
Explain how melting permafrost affects climate change.
Melting permafrost from arctic areas can release large quantities of the greenhouse gas, methane. This enhances the greenhouse effect, increasing the global temperate.
Besides coastal flooding, what is another effect of climate change?
-increased temperatures are causing ice caps to melt so polar habitats disappear.
-global warming effects weather patterns, leading to drought and crop failures.
-acidification of the oceans results in loss of coral.
What can we do to mitigate climate change?
-reduce, reuse,recycle
-walking or cycle instead of using cars
-reduce amount of meat we eat
What are some impacts of climate change on Scotland?
-low lying areas like Inverness will be flooded by sea levels rising
-increase in wildfires due to drought
-competition over water between households
-aquatic food chains will be changed which means fishing industry will be changed too.
How do trees help against climate change?
They hold carbon dioxide (greenhouse gas)
What is the greenhouse effect?
The green house effect is when gases in the atmosphere absorb and emit energy and trap it in the atmosphere, increasing the temperatures.
What are human causes of climate change?
-Burning fossil fuels
-Deforestation
-Agriculture
-Landfill
What is the difference between natural greenhouse effect and the enhanced greenhouse effect?
Enhanced greenhouse effect has a higher concentration of greenhouse gases.
How are the Scottish uplands adapting to climate change?
-Reservoir management, store more water due to drier summers
-slope stabilization, minimize risk of landslides and destruction
How are Scottish cities adapting to climate change?
-Replace car parks with green spaces to reduce urban heat island effect
-Redevelop derelict sites, incorporate climate resilient infrastructure
