climate change Flashcards
What is meant by the GCSE command word ‘assess’?
Rank in order of importance/significance
What is the name given for a cooling period in earth’s history?
Glacial period
what is meant by the term ‘inter-glacial’?
Period of global warming
T or F Their is a correlation (link) between CO2 atmospheric concentrations & global temperatures.
True
Identify x4 pieces of evidence for the past climate change.
Glacier retreat, ice core analysis, tree ring analysis ,sea levels rise
Explain how scientists use tree rings to tell us about past climates.
They study the thickness of the rings . The thicker the ring the warmer the climate.
How do scientists use ice cores to help us find out about past climates?
They use advanced technology to analyse the gasses trapped in the ice core layers the more carbon dioxide present ,the warmer the climate was.
how has volcanic activity impacted upon the earth climate in the past?
the smoke, ash and gas make a blanket that rises and covers the sun which causes a decline in temperature.
give an example of a greenhouse gas.
carbon dioxide
what are four natural causes of climate change?
the earths orbit, volcanic activity, solar activity and asteroids.
how do historical records provide evidence for past climate change?
they use evidence such as paintings as they give us an idea of what the climate would look like then compared to now.
what is the greenhouse effect?
the greenhouse effect is where heat is kept in the earths atmosphere.
name 3 human activities that produce greenhouse gasses enhancing the greenhouse effect?
burning fossil fuels,driving and mining.
what are two reasons for the sea levels rising?
ice caps melting and thermal expansion.
identify 3 consequences of climate change.
drought,forest fires and melting ice.
