Climate Flashcards
Climate
The sum of total weather conditions and variations over a **large area **for a long period of time (30+ years).
Weather
The state of the atmosphere over an area at any point of time.
Climate Control
[ 6 Factors ]
- Latitude
- Altitude
- Pressure & Wind systems
- Distance from the Sea
- Relief features
- Ocean currents
Coriolis force
- It is the apparent force caused by the earth’s rotation.
- It is responsible for deflecting winds towards the right ( Northern Hemisphere ) and the left ( Sounthern Hemisphere ).
Mention the Seasons of India and their period.
- Cold Weather Season - mid November to February
- Hot Weather Season - March to May
- Advancing Monsoon - June to September
- Retreating Monsoon - October to November
Mahawat
The winter rain that is important for the growth of rabi crops.
Loo
- The strong, hot, gusty and dry wind that blows during the hot weather season over the North and North-Western India.
- Direct exposure to loo may be fatal.
Features of Summer
- Low-pressure zone over India
- Loo blows over North India
- Dust storm over North India
- Thunderstorms, heavy rain, hail. - Kaal Baisakhi (W.B.)
- Pre-monsoon showers - Mango Showers (Kerala & Karnataka)
Kaal Baisakhi
Thunderstorms during the summer in West Bengal are locally called Kaal Baisakhi.
Mango Showers
In the end of summer, there may be pre-monsoon showers. They are common in Kerala, Karnataka and help in early ripening of mangoes.
Features of Advancing Monsoon
- Monsoon Breaks
- Monsoon Trough
- Uncertainity
- Floods
Monsoon Breaks
Monsoon rains take place only for a few day at a time and also have rainless intervals. The breaks are related to the **movement of monsoon trough. **
[ Monsoon Break - Wet / Dry Spells ]
If the Monsoon Trough lies over the Plains then…
Plains would receive good rainfall.
If the Monsoon Trough lies over the Himalayas then…
- Plains get longer dry spells.
- Widespread rain in catchment of Himalayan rivers which leads to floods.
October Heat
Due to high temperature and humidity, the weather becomes harsh.
[ Retreating Monsoon ]
