Climate Flashcards
Elaborate about climate change?
Caused by global warming
Rising emissions since industrialization
Mostly CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions caused by:
- electricity production
- industry
- heating of buildings
- traffic
- agriculture (cows > methane).
What do you know about the Paris agreement 2015?
About pursuing efforts to limit temperature increase.
Goals: to reduce the risks and impacts of climate change.
Risks:
- extreme heat
- melting arctic
- rising sea level
- flora & fauna loss
- deteriorating coral reef and fisheries
- impact on million world-citizens (hunger, heat, potable water, housing).
Bottom-up approach: all countries plans for itself.
What can you tell about the EU green deal?
A climate agreement that:
- aims for net zero-emissions in 2050
- reduction 55% emissions in 2030
Which transport modes are considered the worst polluters and why?
Aviation:
- fastest growing source of emissions
- sector has sever impact but pays least taxes
- business flights are the worst
- 8% of global emissions and rising
Cruise ships:
- heavy fuel oils (HFO) cause emissions and toxic particles
- high energy consumption
- waste dumping.
What are the lessons learned due to covid?
- more staycation and traveling within EU
- flying less is possible.
What are the future predictions (after covid)?
- telework will increase
- business flights will decrease
- end of cheap flights (business flights are the business model for offering cheap tickets).
Explain the rebound effect?
When we increase efficiency in, for example, energy; the prices will lower, thus more energy will be used > leads to more production > leads to more emissions.
Ergo, policy making with efficiency as a main measure is not enough.
