Cleavage Flashcards
characteristics of cleavage
- very rapid cell divisions
- no cell growth before division
- no net increase in embryo volume
- cells do not move
- timing and pattern of division is under control of mom
- no RNA synthesis from zygotic genome
meridional cleavage
along the top/bottom axis
equatorial cleavage
cleavage across the middle
radial cleavage
radial symmetry around the top-bottom (sea urchin, amphibians)
spiral cleavage
when look down from above (molluscs)
bilateral cleavage
two sided symmetry (tunicates)
discoidal cleavage
cells on top of ball of yolk (birds, reptiles)
superficial cleavage
cells around outside (insects)
rotational
no simple pattern (mammals, nematodes)
amnion
enables embryo to float in fluid environment
yolk sac
enables nutrient uptake and development of circulatory system
allantois
stores waste products
chorion
contains blood vessels and exchanges gases with outside environment
shell
casing enables embryo to develop outside of mother
placenta
enables embryo to develop inside mother
