what is a clause?
the part of the sentence that contains a verb
what is a simple sentence?
a simple sentence is one that contains one clause, therefore one verb phrase.
can contain various other phrases but only one verb phrase
what is a compound sentence?
a sentence that contains more than one clause joined by a co-coordinating conjunction.
these clauses could stand on their own as simple sentences
you can swap the clauses over the conjunction without changing the meaning
what are the three coordinating conjunctions?

what is a complex sentence?
one that contains a subordinate clause.
a subordinate clause is part of a sentence that contains a verb but cant stand on its own as a simple sentence

what are other forms of complex sentences?
infinite clauses- start with an infwinitive verb, non-finite (so the action carries on).
participle clause- start with a participle verb and are also non-finite
adverbial clauses- look like an adverbial but contain a verb and often start with a preposition.

subject- the thing doing the action in a sentence
verb- the action in a sentence
object- the thing having the action performed to it in a sentence
complement- the thing the subject is being
adverbial- the job in a sentence done by adverbs or prepositional phrases.
