What is Graphology?
The study of the system of symbols which have been produced to communicate language in the written form.
What is the writing system?
Is made up of 26 letters, each letter is known as a Graphemes, letters combined can be called words or morphemes, the words refer to objects and ideas around us in the real world
What is cursive font style?
Handwriting- less formal than the printed it word- processed style.
Most documents us Ariel font any thing different is worth commenting on.
Look out for the use of modern and/or old fonts or ones that link to context.
What is Orthography?
Spelling, watch out for American version.
Advertisements play with their spelling for dramatic effect e.g. carewash = carwash.
What are logograms?
These are any jargon related or special subject related symbols e.g. +,-,=,@,£,$,%,&, ect.
What are Emoticons?
These are images that act almost like Egyptian hieroglyphics e.g. :) :( ;) 😀🤣🙃
What are Graphic Contrasts use for?
Italics can be used for emphasis or to quote key points.
Bold again for emphasis and to draw in the reader’s attention
CAPITALS for shouting
All three combined - over-kill and/or confusion
What is spatial organisation?
How the text has been spaced.
If paragraphs are indented or separated.
Where the headline or titles have been placed.
Major headings tend to be centred.
Subheadings beak up the text and make it more reader friendly.
Bullet points provide quick access to key points.
Columns- journalistic convention.
Pictures, borders, graphs and images tend to support and illustrate the text and must have a caption/anchor.
Layout of the text gives us a pragmatic information e.g. letter, poems, menus, Ect.
Pull quotes- the most shocking fact/statement in the article
What is punctuation?
Full stops show the end of sentences (.)
Truncated sentences (…)indicate a quote has been shortened or a sentence has been cut or unfinished.
Semi-colon (;) connects complex sentences l.
Colon (:) introduces a list or explains what has gone before it in the sentence.
Comma (,) used for listening or pauses.
Brackets () or {} or [] show afterthoughts or provide explanation, dash (-) serves the same function.
Quotation (“…”); exclamation (!); and question (?) marks.
What is use of colour?
Red= warning, Danger, love, energy, action, determination. Blue= trust, peace, loyalty, coldness, conservatism, boyish. Yellow= intellect, optimistic, cheerful, cowardice, illness. Orange= ‘the future’s orange’, ‘orange is the new black’= optimism. Pink= immature, silly, girlish Black= absence of colour so hides emotions, self preservation/ protection.
