Q

What did Ponizovsky et al (2006) use to test the reliability of the ICD 9 and ICD 10?

A

Positive Predictive Value (PPV) which is measuring the proportion of people who get the same diagnosis when reassessed.

PPV scores for schizophrenia increased from 68% in 1989 (ICD 9) to 94.2% in 2003 (ICD 10).

Q

What is a further strength of the reliability of the ICD?

A

The ICD has good inter-rater reliability.

Galeazzi et al (2004) carried out a joint interview with 100 clients looking at psychosomatic symptoms. The Kappa values ranged from 0.69 to 0.97.

Q

What is a strength of the validity of the ICD?

A

The ICD has good predictive validity for schizophrenia.

Mason et al (1997) compared different ways of making a diagnosis. The ICD-9 and ICD-10 were reasonably good at predicting disability in 99 people with schizophrenia 13 years later.

This shows that the initial diagnosis was useful and meaningful i terms of its ability to accurately predict future outcomes.

Q

What issues and debates are related to both classification systems?

A

How psychology has developed over time.

Both the DSM and ICD have been revised a number of times in response to criticisms about reliability and validity.
