classification systems Flashcards
classification systems are regularly revised, we are currently on the 5th version of DSM and 11th of ICD.
who was DSM5 published by
American psychiatric association
classifies mental illness only
created to harmonise with ICD
what does ICD diagnose
mental, behavioural, or neuro developmental disorders
also
infectious or parasitic diseases, neoplasms, blood diseases, metabolic, sleep disorders
evidence of classification systems
s:consistency between DSM and ICD found to be reasonably high. suggests that diagnosis made by diagnosticians using different classification systems are reliable.
w: interrater reliability for DSM and ICD suggests moderate reliability for diagnoses of schizophrenia. inter rater was good for DSM for dementia but not for PD.
CONCLUSION: training of diagnosticians is important to ensure that IRR can be improved.
application
DSM 5 codes for each classification can be found in ICD. allows clinicians and researchers using different systems to communicate effectively.
strengths
icd and dsm regularly updated.
DSM5 advice on diagnosis of people from different cultures(such as the cultural formulation interview)
weakness
DSM devised in america. ICD in Europe so cultural bias is likley.
what about china (ccmd) and other non western cultures. may lack validity when using DSM or ICD for other cultures.
alternative
ICD and DSM use a medical model based.
reductionist because according to psychology review 2018, there is no convincing evidence for chemical imbalance in any mh condition.
a medical model ignores important social and emotional factors in the causes and treatments
however DSM5 SECTION 3 considers “emerging models” such as moving away from categorising mental illnesses according to their symptoms.
