Classification of Matter, Atom, and The Periodic Table Flashcards
Melting point
The temperature at which a solid changes its phase to become a liquid.
Boiling point
The temperature at which a liquid changes its phase to become a gas.
Freezing point
The temperature at which a liquid changes its phase to become a solid
Melting
The process of a solid becoming a liquid
Freezing
The process of a liquid becoming a solid
Evaporation
The process of a liquid becoming a gas. Evaporation can occur over a range of temperatures, not only at the boiling point.
Condensation
The process of a gas becoming a liquid
Sublimation
The process of a solid becoming a gas. Some materials, in certain circumstances, do not have a liquid state and go directly from being a solid to being a gas
Deposition
The process of a gas becoming a solid
Compound
A pure substance made of two or more elements, bonded in a fixed ratio by a chemical reaction
Element
A substance that cannot be broken down into simpler substances by chemical reactions
Mixtures
Two or more pure substances that can be mixed together in any ratio
Homogeneous mixture
A mixture that is uniform and where the different components of the mixture cannot be seen
Heterogeneous mixture
A mixture that is non-uniform and the different components of the mixture can be seen
