Classification of matter Flashcards
What are the properties of materials?
Strength
Thermal conductivity
Electrical conductivity
Brittle
Malleable
Ductile
Magnetic or non-magnetic
Density
Melting point
Boiling point
What is a mixture?
A combination of two or more substances in which the substances keep their own properties.
What are the properties of mixtures?
Not mixed in a fixed ratio
Keep their physical properties
Can be separated by physical means
What are the separation methods?
Filtration
Sieving
Evaporation
Distillation
Chromatography
Separation funnel
What is a pure substance?
Consist only of one type of substance / particle which cannot be separated into simpler components using physical methods.
What is an element?
Consist out of only one type of atom and cannot be separated / broken down into simpler substances
What is a compound?
Consist out of 2 or more different elements chemically bonded and can be separated / broken down into simpler substances
How do ions form?
When atoms gain or lose electrom
What are the properties of metals?
Solid @ room temp
High melting points
Shiny
Grey
Malleable
Ductile
Good conductors of heat and electricity
Strong
Conductivity decreases when heated
What are the properties of non-metals?
Mostly gas @ room temp
Low melting points
Dull
Different colours
Not malleable or ductile
Low conductivity of heat & electricity
Brittle
