Classification of digestive systems Flashcards
8 parts of the digestive tract
- mouth
- esophagus
- stomach
- small intestine
- cecum
- large intestine
- rectum
- anus
Classifications of the digestive tract by anatomy of the stomach
- ruminant - complex stomach
- monogastric - simple stomach (single chamber)
Classifications of digestive systems by diet
- carnivore
- omnivore
- herbivore
It is impossible to have this anatomy/diet combination
ruminant carnivore
This organ system has a greater degree of functional diversity than any other organ in the body
the digestive system
A large, complex stomach/cecum tells you an animal is…
an herbivore (ruminants have a complex stomach, nonruminant herbivores have the biggest cecums but not a complicated stomach)
A simple digestive tract most likely belongs to a…
monogastric carnivore
Why does a horse (monogastric herbivore) need high quality hay (high CP) but a cow (ruminant) can eat low quality hay and still survive?
for cows, the site of digestion (the stomach) occurs before the site of absorption (the small intestine)
for horses, the site of digestion (the colon) occurs before the major site of absorption (the small intestine)
Thus, horses require more nutrient rich food because they are less efficient at absorbing nutrients from their food than cattle
