Classification Matter Flashcards
What is an element???
A substance in which cannot be separated into simpler substances as a result of any chemical change.
If broken down further it will not have the same properties.
Different elements are classified based on different physical properties.
Atoms
Molecule
Ions
???
ATOMS: smallest particle of an element that still retains the chemical identity of the element.made up of protons, electrons, neutrons.
MOLECULE: a cluster of two or more atoms held together with a covalent bond.
IONS: an atom or a group of atoms that has gained or lost electrons to become positive or negative charged.
What is a particle and a phase???
Particle: a General way to say a small bit of matter such as a atom, molecule, or an ion.
Phase: any part of a system which is uniform in both composition and properties.
What are the properties of matter???
Elements,
Compounds,
Mixtures.
What is a pure substance???
A substance that has an unchangeable composition.
What is a compound???
A combination of elements that has a different set of properties than the elements it’s composed of.
NaCl
What is a mixture???
A combination of two or more substances.
There are two types heterogenous and homogenous.
What is heterogenous
Mixture with a varying composition, and more than one phase present. (Salt and pepper, trail mix, macaroni salad)
What is homogenous???
Mixture with uniform composition throughout, only one phase present.
(Boiling point, density, etc….)
What is a solution???
A example of a homogenous mixture, but not at solutions are solid dissolved in a liquid. Mostly the ones we have talked about are!
What are the two components of a solution???
SOLUTE: the component which exists in smaller quantity.
SOLVENT: the component which exists in larger quantity.
When water is in a solution it is always a SOLVENT, Which is a aqueous solution.
