Classification and evolution. Flashcards
What are the five kingdoms?
- Prokaryotae
- Protoctista
- Fungi
- Plantae
- Animalia
Name the 8 levels of taxonomic groups
- DOMAIN
- Kingdom
- Phylum
- Class
- Order
- Family
- Genus
- Species
What is meant by fungi being saprotrophic?
Absorb / gain nutrition from dead or decaying organisms
What is meant by plantae being autotrophic?
They produce their own food
What does heterotrophic mean?
Consume both plants and animals
How would you name an animal based on the binomial naming system
- Their genus is the first name and CAPITALIZED
- The species follows in itallics
What is phylogeny?
The study of the evolutionary history of groups of organisms - showing the relations between organisms.
What is evidence for similarities
- Molecular evidence (protein and DNA similarity)
- Embryological evidence
- Anatomical evidence
- Behavioral evidence
What are the three domains?
- Archaea
- Bacteria
- Eukarya
What is variation within species called?
Intraspecific variation
What is variation between species called?
Interspecific variation
What is continuous variation?
When individuals within a population may vary WITHIN A RANGE - there are no distinct category.
for example: milk yield in a cow and mass.
What is discontinuous variation?
When there are two or more distinct categories - individuals fall into ONLY ONE.
for example: human blood groups.
