Classification
the process of grouping things based on similarities.
Taxonomy
the scientific study of how living things are classified.
Binomial nomenclature-
A naming system for organisms. Every organism is given a two-part name.
Genus
the first part of an organism’s scientific name. Must be capitalized.
Species
the second part of an organism’s scientific name. Is not capitalized.
Taxonomic Key
a series of paired statements that describe the physical characteristics of different organisms.
Nucleus
a dense area in a cell that contains the genetic material (DNA).
Prokaryotes
organisms whose cells lack a nucleus
Eukaryotes
organisms whose cells contain a nucleus.
Classifying Organisms
Grouped so that the organisms are easier to study
