BACTERIA Flashcards
.Cytoplasm
the region inside a cell-
between the nucleus and cell
membrane. It’s a gel-like material.
Ribosomes-
chemical factories in the
cytoplasm where proteins are’
produced
Flagellum
a long, whip-like tail that extends
from the cell membrane or wall.
Asexual reproduction
a reproductive
process that involves only one parent
and produces offspring identical to the
parent
Binary Fission
a form of asexual
reproduction used by bacteria. One
cell divides to form two identical cells.
Sexual reproduction
involves two parents
that combine their genetic material to
produce a new organism, which differs
from both parents.
Conjugation
a form of sexual reproduction
used by bacteria to transfer genetic
material from one cell to another.
Respiration
- process of breaking down
food to release its energy. Often uses
oxygen.
Endospore
a small, round, thick-walled,
resting cell that forms inside a bacterial
cell. Contains genetic material.
Decomposers
organisms that break down
large chemicals in dead organisms into
smaller chemicals.
Infectious disease
illness passed from one
organism to another. The four possible
ways are through direct contact with
another person, a contaminated object,
an infected animal, or an environmental
source.
Antibiotic
a chemical (medication) that can kill bacteria without harming a person.
