Classification Flashcards
Why is classification important?
It allows for the efficient study of organisms.
On what bases are organisms grouped?
If they contain the same evolutionary traits and characteristics.
Name the categories of classification in order.

Is a virus living?
It’s on the borderline between living and non-living.
What do viruses have instead of a cellular structure?
They have a core of genetic material (DNA or RNA, but not both) surrounded by a protein coat.
In what way are viruses like living things?
They can only perform one of the seven vital functions, reproduction.
What do all viruses have?
A capsid or head region that contains genetic material.
What is the capsid made of?
Protein and glycoproteins.
What is the purpose of a tail region?
The tail aids in binding to the host cell’s surface and in introducing virus genetic material to the host cell.
