Classical Genetics 1 - Mendelian Genetics Flashcards

Q

Describe Mendel’s pea plant cross experiment

A
  • Removed stamens from a purple flower.
  • Transferred pollen from stamens of a white flower to carpel of the purple flower.
  • The pollinated carpel matured into a pod.
  • The seeds from the pod were then planted to produce the first generation of offspring. All flowers in F1 generation were purple.

Q

State and describe the Mendelian laws

A

Law of segregation

  • For each gene an individual has two alleles.
  • The two alleles separate during the formation of gametes.

Law of independent assortment

  • Individuals contain many genes.
  • The alleles of each gene separate independent from each other.

Law of dominance
- The trait of a dominant allele will suppress the trait of a recessive allele.
