Classical Genetics 1 - Mendelian Genetics Flashcards
1
Q
Describe Mendel’s pea plant cross experiment
A
- Removed stamens from a purple flower.
- Transferred pollen from stamens of a white flower to carpel of the purple flower.
- The pollinated carpel matured into a pod.
- The seeds from the pod were then planted to produce the first generation of offspring. All flowers in F1 generation were purple.

Q
State and describe the Mendelian laws
A
Law of segregation
- For each gene an individual has two alleles.
- The two alleles separate during the formation of gametes.
Law of independent assortment
- Individuals contain many genes.
- The alleles of each gene separate independent from each other.
Law of dominance
- The trait of a dominant allele will suppress the trait of a recessive allele.
