classic study Flashcards
what is the cog classic study
baddely
what was baddelys aim
to investigate the influence of acoustic and semantic word similarity on learning and recall in stm and ltm
what was baddelys sampel
72 male and female from applied psychology unit
what where baddelys conditions
group a - 10 acoustically similar
b- 10 acuostically disimilar
c- 10 semantically similar
d- 10 semantically disimilar
what was baddelys procedure
after groups where selected eah list of 10 words where presented in correct order
after presentation pp where given six distractor tasks
after distractor task pp where asked to recall the word list in one minuet
this whole process repeated 3x
after learning trials pps where given 15 min interface task
after interface task pp given a suprise recall test on words
what where baddelys findings
fewer acoustically similar words recalled compared to accoustically disimilar
= acoustic encoding initially difficult but no affect on LTM
recall worse for semantically similar than semantically disimilar words = info encoded semanticaly in ltm
what did baddely conclude
STM encodes acoustically
LTM encodes semantically
what is a strength
standerdised procedure
