Classes of Antibacterials - from handout Flashcards
Penicillin MOA
inhibits cell wall synthesis
bacterocidal
Penicillin Pharmacokinetics
renal excretion - almost all
Penicillin ADR
anaphylaxis - type 1 is rare but rash is common
Cephalosporin MOA
cell wall synthesis inhibition
bactericidal
Cephalosporin Pharmacokinetics
renal excretion - almost all
Cephalosporin Spectrum/Use
extended spectrum
NOT susceptible to penicillinases
Cephalosporin ADR
allergy, less severe than penicillin. very little cross sensitivity
Vancomycin MOA
cell wall synthesis inhibition (stage 2)
Bacterocidal
Vancomycin pharmokinetics
poor oral absorption
renal excretion
Vancomycin spectrum/use
narrow: gram + cocci
Active against: MRSA, enterococci, and C. diff
Vancomycin ADR
ototoxicity, renal toxicity, monitoring of plasma levels are needed
Macrolides MOA
protein synthesis inhibitor
Bacteriostatic
Macrolide pharmacokinetics
good oral and IV
concentrates in the lung
Macrolide Spectrum/uses
extended spectrum: gram + cocci/rods (good alternative if PCN allergy)
SOME gram - bacilli (legionella, bordetella, h. pylori)
Atypicals: mycoplasma/chlamydia
Tetracycline MOA
protein synthesis inhibitor
Bacteriostatic
