Mental self leadership (MSL) strategies
self talk + mental practice = thought patterns
what is self talk?
- what we tell ourselves
- our dialogue w/ ourselves
- research shows what we tell ourselves impacts us emotionally and physically
example of self talk: little engine that could
told herself she could, and she did
example self talk: dan obrien (olympic 1996 gold medal)
he said he won bc he changed his self talk
dysfunctional self talk categories:
- extreme thinking (seeing no middle ground)
- mind reading (assuming you know what someones thinking)
- fortune telling (worry self talk, predicting the future without evidence)
- should statements (gives no flexibility, aka using word should in self talk… don’t say “I should” say “I can”
example with self talk: dead poets society
- paralyzed in self talk
- he was dysfunctional self talking
- shut out the world and gave a good poem
declarative self talk
“I can do well in this interview”
interrogative self talk
“can i do well”
- makes you think
- interrogative is more effective
- research shows talking to yourself in third person is more effective
mental practice
imagining successful completion of an event before physically begin the event
ex of mental practice: cool runnings movie
- jamaican bobsled team
- mental practice in the bathtub together
- research shows those who use mental practice succeed more
communication
the act of transmitting info, thoughts, and process through various channels
effective communication
when the message the sender receives is accurately received
ineffective communication
message sent (sender) is not received in the right way by the receiver (example Dr. Neck and wife?)
example of inefective communication: swingers movie
- message that Mike wanted to send is he liked her, message she received is hers crazy/stalker, etc.
communication barriers:
- noise
- different perceptions
- language differences
- conflicting non-verbal cues
- poor listening
Pig story illustrates the five levels of listening:
- 1) ignoring
- 2) pretending
- 3) selective listening
- 4) attentive listening
- 5) active listening
example: video clip w/ the nail shows
- he was not listening and immediately tried to solve the problem
- research shows a lot of us do this or think of the next thing we’re going to say
