Teacher Labelling
To attach meaning or definition to someone to define them. In this case teachers may label students as hardworking or troublemakers. There is evidence to suggest that teachers pass judgement on their students based on pre-existing stereotypes of what constitutes the idea pupil.
Becker 1971 - labelling
Teacher see m/c students as the closest to the ‘ideal’ student.
Hargreaves - labelling
Suggests that labelling leads to certain students being given imaginary halos which stay with them during their educational career. Future interactions with teachers
Self-Fulfilling Prophecy
Students become their label. If labelled negatively you can become negative. Predictions come true purely on the basis of it being made in the first place.

Teacher Labels a pupils & makes predictions about them in relation to the label.

The teacher interacts with the pupil based on the label.

The pupil internalises the label and the teachers expectations and it becomes part of their self concept. The pupil becomes the label & acts accordingly.

rebellion - rejection of what the school stands for.
Nike identities
w/c pupils are conscious that society and school look down on them. This makes them create other types of self worth. They do this by investing in brands such as Nike.
