What is Bourdieu’s theory of cultural capital?
-Bourdieu argues that different capitals owned by individuals can determine their position in the social stratification structure and further influence their pattern of their behaviours. There are 3 forms of capital;

>Cultural
>economic
What is the cultural deprivation theory?
They believe the working class children are “culturally deprived’ in the education system. They lack the cultural equipment and reasoning to preform well in school, which is why they underachieve. They do not have the right educational culture for success

Bernstein argues that working class students do not have the right language code for educational success
-Middle class use Elaborated speech Code
-Working class use Restricted speech Code
What is meant by parents education?
Middle class parents are more likely to actived better in education and have higher qualifications.
There parenting style, parents educational behvaiour and use of income is different. And they have more income
What is meant by working class subcultures?
Sugarman argues that working class students form subcultures outside of school which contain 3 main factors that contribute to their underachivement
-Immidiate Gratification
-Fatalism
-Low value on education
What are criticisms of the cultural deprivation theory?
What is material deprivation?
Material deprivation refers to the lack of material items and necessities needed for educational success, including poverty, lack of housing and income.
What are some STAT’s relating to material deprivation?
-Only 1/3 pupils who are elligable for free school meals achieve A*-C at GCSE
-Exclusion and truancy rates are higher for pupils from poorer families
-90% of failing schools located in deprived areas
What is ‘Housing’ in terms of material deprivation?
-Poor housing can impact on pupils achieving as over crowded housing can make it more difficult to study, leaving less room for educational activities. Poorer quality housing may also impact on child achivement by crowded homes causing greater risk of accidents, cold and damp housing can cause ill health
