Class 6 Quiz Flashcards
Otoacoustic Emission Test (OAE)
- measures hair cell function in the inner ear
- specifically the outer hair cells
Most common OAE population
- infants and other special populations
Why would you complete an OAE on an adult?
- nonverbal
- intellectual disability/cognitive
- malingering
You will produce OAEs if
you have normal hearing
You will not produce OAEs if
hearing loss is greater then 25-30 decibles
Why would OAE be a great tool to complete a newborn hearing screening?
- they cant raise their hands- respond
- usually sleeping/easier to do then
Spontaneous emissions occur in..
60-70% of people
Emission refers to
- sound generated within the normal cochlea of the ear in response to stimulation
A little child with congestion will have
low frequency emission, more robust during high frequency
What is the key to a successful OAE?
Probe placement
- not getting any noise outside of the probe
- to limit sound leaking
Auditory brainstem response (ABR) Testing
- adhesive recording electrodes are placed on the forehead and ears
- captures and analyzes recordings of electric potentials generated by the auditory neural pathways
When is ABR done
- patient is laying down
- patient remains still and quiet throughout the test- may require sedation
How long does ABR take?
1-2 hours
3 distinct features of ABR
- morphology- shape
- latency- how far out it occurs
- amplitude- how “large” the wave is
ABR helps diagnose…
- neurological abnormalities of the 8th nerve and auditory pathways
- estimation of hearing sensitivity
- soft test for hearing loss, acoustic tumors, cerebellopontine angle tumors
