Class 6 - Motivation Flashcards
Goal Setting Theory
Setting goals Drastically increases and sustains performance. Feedback very important
Limits of Maslows Hierarchy of needs?
What is a need? Are there only 5? Does desire stop once need is fulfilled? Are they hierarchal arranged?
Ultimately not a useful tool to motivate employees
What are stretch targets as related to Goal Setting Theory?
Goals that are considered virtually unattainable. Must be accompanied by autonomy and reserves. Goals must be set at max level that employees will accept / commit to
What is empowerment theory?
For employees to be motivated, they must have a say in how work is performed. Includes job characteristics, participation, and feedback from colleagues
What are implications of job characteristics model?
Perceptions of intrinsic job characteristics are highly correlated with internal work motivation. Managers should combine tasks (variety / horizontal loading), provide feedback, add responsibility (vertical loading), and identify customers
When does feedback work / not work?
Works when it directs attention to task goals & past mistakes / learning opportunities
Does not work when it threatens self esteem or feedback is irrelevant. Backfires if it is simple praise, discouragement, or early on in a complex task
