What was Marx’s view on class? And what are the criticisms?
- bourgeoisie and proletariat classes
- exploitation leads to political revolution, end of capitalism, property owned collectively, distributed to the masses.
- criticism: 4 classes, no revolution, separation of ownership and control of production, disregards ethnicity, gender, power and status
What was weber’s stance on class?
• class shared similar position in market or capitalist economy. Similar economic reward (pay/life chances/opportunities). Multiple classes.
What is the main difference between Marx and weber’s point of views?
More classes, weber’s notion of class not solely based on ownership
What is weber’s view on social stratification?
Patterns inequality preserve status, class difference. Takes into account status, wealth and power
What is status?
Similar status determined by education, ethnicity; background, manners, occupation, wealth source.
What is power?
Individual may occupy different positions on dimensions of stratification
What are the factories leading to inequality?
Prejudice & discrimination
What is prejudice?
Fixed attitude not based on actual individual experience, rather personal perception
What is discrimination?
Actual behaviour unfavourable to individual or group
Define social inequality in regards to class
People do not enjoy same/ equal access to power, income, and wealth in society
