  1. Cultural awareness:
    openess and self reflection recognizing the presence of racism and ageism.
  2. Cultural knowledge:
    what a nurse brings to the caring situation and what the nurse learns about the person and their culture.
  3. Cultural skills:
    skillful cross-cultural nursing is developing a mutual respect between the nurse and the person
    Ex: using interpreters, respectful communication, listening carefully to what the client is saying.

The LEARN model is used to help increase the effectiveness of nursing interventions. What is the LEARN model

A

L = listen carefully to what the older person is saying to you. Look for the non-verbal as well as the verbal signs of communication

E = explain your perception of the situationand the problems

A = acknowledge and discuss both the similarities and the differences between your perception and the goals of those of the older person

R = recommend a plan of action that takes both perspectives into account

N = negotiate a plan that is mutually acceptable

What are some health disparities that Aboriginals face in Canada
(there are 5)

A
  • Lower socioeconomic conditions – even when performing the same work, pay is less for Aboriginal people
  • More Aboriginal seniors live in poverty than non-Aboriginal
  • More likely to reside in overcrowded, poorly constructed homes
  • There are limited assisted living facilities on reserves and no long term care facilities – seniors requiring care must leave their communities
  • Lower literacy levels – far reaching implications such as inability to read/understand prescriptions and health related instructions
