What does ethics mean?
the practice or beliefs of a certain group (ex: medical ethics, nursing ethics)
Define values
beliefs or attitudes about the worth of a person, object, idea or action.
Define beliefs (or opinions)
are interpretations or conclusions that people accept as true.
Define attitudes
are mental positions or feelings toward a person, object, or an idea (ie. acceptance, compassion, openness).
What is an ethical dilemma?
It is a conflict between 2 sets of values, both which are ‘good’ but neither provides a satisfactory outcome for either party
How do I know if its an ethical dilemma?
- It cannot be resolved through science alone – requires research, gathering information from various sources
- It is confusing/perplexing/gnaws at your stomach feeling – logic cannot be applied uniformly or at all and often others disagree with you
- The problem has profound implications in other areas of care/service

What are four main points to remeber when making ethical decisions
- Ethical reasoning is rational and systematic
- Based on ethical principles & codes rather than on emotions, intuition, fixed policies, or precedent.
- A good decision is one that is in the client’s best interests & also preserves the integrity of all involved.
- Nurses have ethical obligations to their clients, agency, & health care providers.
What is in the ethical decision making model
- Define the ethical dilemma
- Clarify the personal & professional values, ethical principles, and laws involved.
- Identify the alternatives for the actions.
- Choose an action.
- Generalize the solution to other similar cases.
