What are listening skills?
Listening skill is the ability to accurately receive sound and interpret messages in the communicative process
What is the difference between Listening and Hearing?
Listening requires active concentration and involvement in order to fully process or understand what the speaker is trying to convey. The ears are the major organ used for this communication skill
while
Hearing can often be seen as a passive function due to the fact that concentration or involvement is not needed, one can hear and not listen especially when a statement or remark is not directed toward the person.
State the 3 types of Listening settings/situations
a.] Interactive setting
b.] Non-Interactive setting
c.] Partially Interactive setting
What is Interactive setting?
This is the setting by which the listener is allowed and required to give an immediate answer and reply, it is an active conversation were two or more parties take turns to share their opinions, feelings, thoughts or ideas.
What is a Non-Interactive setting?
This is a setting by which the listener is does not have the opportunity to actively respond or create argument with the speaker usually due to distance e.g. speeches, tv shows, radio etc.
What is Partially Interactive setting?
This is a setting whereby the listener and main speaker may communicate when the main speaker allows for it e.g. when asking question or opinion.
this is usually done during seminars, workshops, presentations etc.
What are the types of Listening skills?
a.] Active Listening
b.] Courteous Listening
c.] Critical Listening
What is Active Listening?
This type of listening skill usually entails full concentration, this is because there is a purpose for listening e.g. to understand and effectively follow instruction etc.
What is Critical Listening?
This type of listening involves full concentration, this is because the point is to acquire knowledge, understand it and pass personal judgement
What are some techniques for effective listening?
a.] Maintain a comfortable position when listening
b.] Eliminate any bias you have against the speaker
c.] Identify the purpose of listening
d.] Concentrate on making meaning of what the speaker is saying
e.] Avoid interrupting the speaker
f.] Avoid ‘aggressive listening’
g.] Avoid superficial listening
