Class 1 Deck 1 Flashcards
What is the first receptor in every branch of the nervous system?
-Nicotinic
What is the only nervous system that has the muscarinic receptor?
-Parasympathetic
What enzyme turns Choline and Acetyl CoA into acetylcholine?
-Choline acetyltransferase
What deactivates acetylcholine?
-acetylcholinesterase
The creation of acetylcholine is mediated by what type of action potential?
-Calcium
What hydrolizes ACH and where?
- Cholinersterase
- Synaptic cleft
What is the neurotransmitter for adrenergic neurons?
-Noreinephrine
Where does norepi bind?
- Alpha 1
- Beta 1 and 2
What 4 ways can the norepi signal be terminated?
- Reuptake
- Dillution by diffusion
- Metabolism by MAO and COMT
What are the 2 types of synthetic non-catecholamines and give an example of each.
- Indirect (ephedrine)
- Direct (Neosynepherine)
How do indirect acting symapthomimetics work? Direct acting?
- They release endogenous norepi
- They work directly on effector organs
Anticholinesterase drugs can be divided into what 2 categories?
- Tertiary amines (Physostigmine)
- Quaternary amines
What is the difference between tertiary and quaternary amine?
- Tertiary = Neutral charge, crosses BBB
- Quaternary = Positive charge, reverse NDMR
How does Anticholinesterase drugs work?
-Inhibit acetylcholinerase which results in increased acetylcholine.
How does neostigmine/pyridostigmine work?
-Carbamylates acetylcholinesterase and blocks its ability to hydrolyze acetylcholine
