what was reconstruction?
the period of rebuilding the South and readmitting Southern states into the Union
what was Abraham Lincoln’s 10% plan?
it required southerners to take an oath stating their loyalty to the union, after a minimum of 10% take the oath the state would be required to make a new constitution and band slavery.
why were radical republicans considered “Radical”?
because they wanted extreme change in the south and they wanted to punish the south for causing the Civil War
who were the “freedmen”?
they were freed african american slaves
what did the freedmen’s bureau do?
it provided food, clothing, and medical care to freedmen in need
who was John Wilkes Booth?
he was Lincoln’s assassin
what did the 13th amendment do?
it ended slavery for good because it said that there shall be no more slavery ever in the U.S.
what were black codes?
it allowed white men to take advantage of African Americans and it was only a little better than slavery.
what did the Civil Rights act of 1866 do?
it told freedmen that they are protected and their citizenship cannot be taken away from them
what did the 14th amendment do?
it gave freedmen the right to vote
what did the 15th amendment do?
it said that nobody could deny african american males that right to vote
who were scalawags?
they were southerners who supported the reconstruction act and the Radical Republicans
who were the carpet baggers?
they were people who moved from the north to the south because they supported the southern reconstruction so they moved to make money
what was the K.K.K.?
they were a secret society who covered themselves in white sheets and hoods and used fear and violence to torture free men and women
what was sharecropping?
it was when whites payed freemen very little to continue working on their farms in hope to eventually own their own farm but in reality it would have taken a very long time for them to save enough money to do that because they generally don’t know the value of money
