What was significant about Dred Scott?

A

Scott sued his master because he took him to free states, therefore he should be free. The case eventually went to the Supreme Court, the Court ruled that the Congress had no power to abolish slavery, therefore the Missouri Compromise and other compromises limiting slavery where unconstitutional.

What was significant about John Brown?

A

Brown and 22 men raided a town in Virginia, in hopes to free slaves, he kidnapped the town’s most important people and held them hostage. Eventually, he was convicted of treason, murder, and conspiracy and was hanged.

What was the Compromise of 1850?

A

This compromise admitted that California a free state and the territories of New Mexico, Nevada, Arizona, and Utah would be allowed to decide to permit slavery or not when they applied for statehood.

What was significant about Nat Turner?

A

Turner was a slave and him and 60 other slaves led a violent rebellion, killing more than 50 Virginians. This rebellion scared many slave owners and causes them to add new restrictions on slaves.
