Dred sued for his freedom in the supreme court, arguing that since he lived in a free state for so long, he was therefore a free man
Justice Roger Taney said he had no right to sue since the fathers of confederation didn’t count Black men as people, therefore unconstitutional to prohibit the spread of slavery
Southern states tell north to live by the ruling or else the will secede from the union
