Fort Sumter Sc, April 12th, 1861q

A

Fort Sumter in the South is being threatened to be taken over. Doesn’t want to let the union dissolve so he doesn’t want to turn over to the south. The north would be looked at as the aggressor if they supplied the fort. England might support the south. Decide to send supplies, not supplying them, the south finds that enough reason for shots fired.

Importance of border states

A

Deleware, Maryland, West Virginia, and Kentucky. Slave states loyal to the union. Essential to keep them loyal. They’re helpful to the north. More than 50% of the southern white population is in this group. Manufacturing in those boarder states. Ohio River in Kentucky, allowed to cross the river without landing in enemy land.

A

Habeas Corpus, freedom of press. Deems it necessary to suspend these rights. Draft begins. Many enlisted are Irish immigrants, don’t like they have to fight the war for slavery which would increase competition.

A

Thinks it’s not going to be a short war, the south will fight to the end.

Anaconda plan

A

Use a naval blocade around the south. Liberate the slaves. Take the mississippi and cut the south in half. It is a war of nutrition, who will die first? Total war, destruction of railroads and towns.

General Irwin McDowell hope to end the war and push at bull run. The south is able to hold and push the advance of the union troops because of Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. Convinces everybody that it’s going to be a long war.

A

Peace democrats. They wanted the north to make peace with the south. Live north of the Ohio river. There is a fear of free slaves making their way to the north to take their jobs.

George McClellan plan. wants to go to Yorktown, unload the entire platoon and take Richmond. Lincoln agrees. Sail down for an invasion of Virginia. Keep getting delayed by silly pranks. Used large oak trunks and make them look like cannons. He refuses to advance.

A

Lee’s able to push McClellan back down the peninsula. Lee plans to come to Antietam because if they win on Northern war, they might win.

A

Lincoln is forced to use abolition to end the war. Keeps the Europeans out of the war, since it’s deemed morally run. McClellan is fired because he had the battle plans for the south. Let general Lee escape, they weren’t aggressive enough.

Freed some of the slaves. Freed all the slaves in the south who were in rebellion to the union. Boarder states’ slaves were not free. Kept them to keep them on their side. Made it a fight to the finish. Start taking a role in the battle

A

Abolition is the best way to preserve the union. Use it to keep the British out of the war.

A

General Benjamin Butler used confiscation acts of 1861-64 to help support the war. Runaway slaves helped support the army. Labeling them contraband, they were able to be kept to the north. 54th Massachusetts, regiment of mostly black soldiers. Helped lead the attack on Fort Wagner, 1863.

A

Want to continue to attack the North to quickly end the war in victory. Pickett’s army is told to charge even though they don’t have the high ground and gets demolished.

Importance of Battle

A

Fredericksburg in 1862 was a huge upset as there was a lot of men lost on the Northern side as Lee was able to take the high ground and plow down union soldiers. North needed a win. Lee attacks Meade’s solders, July 1-3. Day 2, Joshua Chamberlain was in charge, was a professor, did not let anybody get around the union flank. Held the confederates back.

Importance of Vicksburg

A

Last major link connecting the confederacy. July 4th, lay siege to Vicksburg and choke them out. They surrender after not letting anything in or out. It demolishes the southern army. Effectively cutting the south in half.

Grant’s Idea of total war

A

At the battle of missionary Ridge, Grant is able to take Chattanooga, and all they need is an invasion of Atlanta. Grant leads troops to fight series of battles to wear down Lee’s battle. Final battle at Petersburg.

A

William Tecumseh Sherman takes over the battle of Atlanta after Grant’s success of taking Chattanooga. Burns Atlanta to the ground after laying siege. Atlanta to the sea is destroyed= total war.

A

Pro-abolition republicans are frustrated that the war hasn’t ended or all the slaves aren’t freed. Northern democrats are tainted from being with the south. Lincoln forms the Union party. George McClellan is the Republican vote.

Soldiers support Lincoln, some support General McClellan. His main charge is that he will finish what he started. Atlanta does fall and Sherman takes it. Closer to the end. Now want to care for the wounds of the south.

A

John Wilkes Booth kills Abraham at a play, he was an actor there and knew the show. Shot him during a loud moment. Grant wasn’t there, frustrated since he wanted to take out Grant as well. Raffbone is stabbed and so traumatized by the death of the president that he kills his wife in bed.

Economy of the north

Costs was around 15 billion dollars. Lives lost is 1/3 of southern men is gone. Costs severe problems. Gettysburg looses 50,000 men in three days. 1,000,000 men injured, 6,000,000 dead.

2nd Industrial Revolution

A

Stimulates the 2nd industrial revolution. War materials are now being sold that the north produced during the war. Transportation, transcontinental railroad. Homestead act- 62’ giving free homesteads down to the west to improve the land increases food.
GOP and business, tied hand in hand. New Banking system. Tariffs used to protect the north.
