The difference between civil liberties and civil rights
civil liberties protect people from unjust government interference or action while civil rights protect people from discrimination
Selective Incorporation
applying the guarantees of the Bill of Rights to state and local governments (most bill of rights have been incorporated, not all)
The Establishment vs Free Exercise clause
establishment clause = prohibits the government from establishing religion, creates a separation between church and state. Free exercise = guarantees the right to practice any religion or no religion at all.
Civil Rights Act of 1964
prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion, sex or national origin
Voting Rights Act of 1965
prohibits racial discrimination in voting
Title IX
prohibits discrimination based on sex in education programs and activities that receive federal financial assistance
The Exclusionary Rule
prohibits the use of illegally obtained evidence in a criminal trial
