What does the Declaration of Human Rights list?
Fundamental rights and freedom to which all human beings are entitled
Who drafted the Declaration of Human Rights?
A committee chaired by Eleanor Roosevelt (USA)
Why was the Declaration of Human Rights created?
Because the United Nations Charter did not specify the rights of the people
What are civil liberties?
Basic freedom from government interference
What are civic rights?
Rights that protect people and communities from discrimination
Includes positive/negative rights
What are positive rights?
Rights that require the government to take action to provide
What are negative rights?
Freedom from interference (civil liberties are a specific set of negative rights, meaning free from government inference)
What is universalism?
All humans possess an equal sets of rights
What is relativism?
Rights are not universal but are instead shaped by culture, religion, or tradition
What was the Magna Carta (signed in 1215)?
Rights that limited the power of the monarch
What was the 1689 English Bill of Rights?
Increased the power of the parliament & people –> ultimately leading to the limiting power of the monarch
What was the Declaration of the Rights of Man and the Citizen in France?
Men are born free and remain free and equal in rights
What does the 1791 US Bill of Rights consist of?
Consists of the first ten amendments to the United States Constitution, with its main purpose to protect the basic rights of citizens
