Civic Participation Flashcards
Social Capital
the feature of social life: networks, norms and trusts between participants to act together pursuing shared objectives
Social Capital (Coleman, 1988)
social capital is productive,
making possible the achievements of certain ends that in its
absence would not be possible. It is dependent on the relationships between people.
Why does social capital matter?
it is productive, creates trust between actors, constrains how people behave with one another, policing of one another
Age effect
as you get older, your behaviour, values and attitudes change
Cohort Effect
People of different ages might differ in their behaviour, values and attitudes because they came of age at different times
Period effect
some shocks which affect the behaviour, values and attitudes of everyone, eg. 9/11
Urbanisation
creates a society where people interact in a transactional basis rather than being community orientated
