The whole set of voluntary associates (formal and informal) that are outside both the state and the market (ex; churches, clubs, unions, non-profit organizations)
Civil society
These associations collect and disseminate information, employ independent critics and watchdogs, file lawsuits, and teach their members to understand and promote rights for all
Purpose of civil society
Political resources, status theory, sense of political equality, and civic education
4 theories to increase equity in participation
Try to enhance everyone’s knowledge and time for politics so that voter turnout will rise
Political resources
Greater educational attainment relative to others would increase equity in participation
Status theory
If people had concrete experiences of political power and efficacy, they would demand more (increase participation)
Sense of political equality
Teens who are encouraged to participate civically do better in school, hence the connection to educational attainment and civic engagement
Civic education
Permits individuality, generates memorable stories, develops virtues
Value of the participation process
A person outside of a group making sure things are happening correctly
Watchdog
A person inside/ a part of a group that exposes things happening incorrectly
Whistleblower
Supporting organizations and groups that hold the same values as you
Voting with your dollar
If you are subject to a rule, you should be able to be a part of the development process.
