Social capital
“I’ll do this for you without expecting anything specific back from you, in the confident expectation that someone else will do something for me down the road.”
Generalized reciprocity
“I’ll do this for you if you do that for me.”
Specific reciprocity
Inclusive, outward-looking and encompasses people across diverse social cleavages, better for linkage to external assets and for information diffusion
Bridging social captial
Exclusive, inward-looking and tends to reinforce exclusive identities and homogenous groups, good for understanding specific reciprocity and mobilizing solidarity
Bonding social capital
The varied amounts of social capital correlates with the level of civic engagement (ex; more social capital=more civic engagement)
Social capital is the “currency” of civic engagement
